Statement of Research Interests

Since the early 2000s, power has been the central problem that limits the performance of computer systems, from datacenters to smartphones and wearable devices. Data movement is the primary contributor to power dissipation in nanometer ICs. Consider, for instance, the energy cost of performing a double precision addition on a graphics processing unit (GPU) implemented at the 22nm technology node: the energy required to fetch the two operands from memory is 50× greater than the energy required to move the operands from the edge of the GPU chip to its center, which itself is another 10× higher than the cost of the actual addition [1]. This gap between the energy cost of data movement and computation is expected to widen in future computers. In the light of this trend, a recent report by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) [2] identifies the power consumed in moving data between the memory and the processor as one of the ten significant challenges in the exascale computing era; the same report indicates that by 2020, the energy cost of moving data across the memory hierarchy will be orders of magnitude higher than the cost of performing a floating point operation. Thus, minimizing data movement is a first order design constraint for future computer systems. My research is in computer architecture, with an emphasis on energy efficient computing. As part of my graduate studies, I led and contributed to projects spanning multiple areas of research within computer architecture, from the design of domain specific ISAs and hardware/software interfaces to energy-efficient microarchitectures and the physical structure of memory subsystems. This work has produced three significant results: 1) novel architectural techniques to improve the energyand bandwidth-efficiency of data movement between the processor and off-chip memory [3–9]; 2) reliable and energy efficient memory systems leveraging emerging technologies (i.e., resistive RAM) [10, 11]; and 3) fast and low-noise microprocessor architectures for future energy efficient computer systems [12, 13]. In this statement, I briefly summarize my contributions, as well as my future research interests.
